Staromainsky District was founded in 1965. The administrative center is the town of Staraya Maina. District’s territory covers 2044,1 km². The district is situated in the north-easten part of the Zavoljskaya part of the Ulyanovsk region, in the forest-steppe zone. It borders on the Spassky District of the Tatarstan Republic in the North, on the Cherdaklinsky District in the South; and the border goes along the Kuibishevskoe storage pond in the West. The length of the territory is 59 km from the North to the South and 47 km from the East to the West. The railway station “Cherdakly”, the Cherdaklinsky meat factory and the granary are situated in 34 km from the town. The area which is covered with the forest is 48 000 ha. The climate is characterized as moderate warm, with moderate warm moistening. The relief of the territory refers to the Privoljsky regional lowland, which is the ancient valley of the river Volga. The hydrographical net of the district consists of the rivers of: Maina, Krasnaya, Kandalka, Uren’, Utka. The main soil is black earth- 76 800 ha with the undertypes: lixiviating, and typical carbonates. Mineral resources are sand and the red clay, which is mainly used at the district’s factories. Hydrogen waters and oil-beds are found here. The ecology is favorable. There are 2 churches, 2 mosques and 10 resort centers. The amount of the constant population is 19459 people (01.01.2010), 12577 people of this population live in the country (64,6%). The amount of working population is 11 800 people (61.3%).

Transport: every settlement can be reached by any kind of transport. The length of the road net with hard cover is 299,6 km. There are 20 routes in the region.
The trade net consists of 181 trade places of different goods. There are 2 canteens and 3 cafes on the territory of the district.

The rest are involved in industry (forest industry, foundry, furniture production, bread and meat production) and in the sphere of consumer services.
Tourism
The guarded natural monuments:
- The grey herons’ colony (2 ha);
- The sea eagles’ shore (84 ha);
- The forest pearl (1226 ha);
There are 2 churches: Bogoyavlenskaya in the town of Staraya Maina and Kosmo-Domianskaya in the village of Kokryat’.
There are 2 mosques: In the Tatarskoe Uraikino Village and the Ertuganovo Village.
There are 28 touristic centers (18 of them work).
A new village center of local history “Krasnorech’e” is opened in the building of the school in the Novikovka village.
